Searching for Dragons
A small window of opportunity creaked open, the desk was clear, swell was on its way and the winds were staying light.....time to pack some equipment and head off west for an adventure.
On the journey things were not looking that promising, torrential rain and an ominous lack of horizon made us think we were going unprepared for our quest. Slowly, the situation improved and we arrived with the sun desperately trying to penetrate the broken smoke in the sky. We donned on our rucksacks, got suited up into our rubber armour and with boards under arms we started our quest for hidden rewards.
First stop saw us needing to clamber down cliffs to the 3 ft perfection below. The cliffs were offering perfect protection and it was making the water almost like an oil slick of glassy stillness. We surfed the waves for a solid hour and a half until the tide fattened the waves too much.
Off we went for a fairly lengthy walk to the next spot, the wind was slightly stronger here but still cross-offshore. Heavy looming cliffs gave the place a fairly menacing feel and with the waves ramping up pretty big, we were truly in the dragons lair. Like warriors we rode whatever the sea threw at us...and got pretty humbled and smashed along the way.....but we survived.
With toes eventually numbing despite the now dazzling sunshine, we headed back to start the journey home. We stopped at a childhood haunt, three cliffs. Here my Grandmother used to bathe regularly and my late father used to have holidays here, always feels like home and quite choked walking down the dunes.
With a castle on the cliffs, horses running through the dunes, sheltered perfect waves...truly the setting of a fairy tale.....
We never saw any dragons that day, but we saw some picture book views, had a smile on our faces the whole day and that night we felt we would live happily ever after....
