Yesterday The English Surfing Federation decided to put an end to inequality in sporting prizes, insisting on equal prize winnings for professional men and women.

Currently female surfers earn hundreds of pounds less than their male counterparts when they win competitions.

English Surfing Federation committee yesterday agreed the 2016 English National Surfing Championships will be gender equal in terms of prize purse.

Previously men won £1,000, while women netted £500 - with other competitions around the world still seeing a $40,000 difference in winnings.

Andy Sturt, chairman of the ESF said: "The English Surfing Federation is committed to give equal status to men and women in prize money, this parity is long overdue."
